Qualities of a Caregiver

Are you thinking of becoming a Caregiver? Yes, then you may be wondering what qualities you need. Before training, there is three qualities you will need, Compassion, Empathy and Kindness.

Being able to connect with your customer is essential, this requires being able to listen to and Understand the person, after all it is their care.

Treating people with dignity and respect, always treat people how you would want to be treated, or how you would want your relative to be treated if they were being provided care.

What interventions do Caregivers provide?

When providing care there are many interventions you’re provide, these are determined by the individual needs and each person is unique, care is never “one fits all”. Just to name a few:

  • Personal Care
  • Emotional Support
  • First Aid
  • Food & Nutritions
  • Companionship

Being a Caregiver is an amazing job and very rewarding, however it is also a very important one, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. You will find that a lot of people you will support have the most amazing sense of humour. We do support people after all.

That being said, a lot of customers can be complex and may present with challenging behaviour so at times there is a need to also be reserved and thick skinned. It is important to still be able to remain empathic and compassionate towards a person, regardless of the challenges you are facing, patience is a massive part in be able to continue to provide care with out judgement. There will normally be reasons as to why a person presents in a certain way, for example they may have a head injury, they not long have the cognitive ability as you do.
